The oscilating tools were around a long time as cast removal tools in doctors' offices. I was interested in them since there is no spinning blade to cut you or throw debris. I bought this since the fein was way too much for non-professional use. I was trimming out some transition strips and laminate flooring and the regular dremel wouldn't go deep enough.....so I bought this multimax.
The good:
1.Cost.... under $100 for something that saved me a lot of time and mess---didn't have the regular dremel cutting disks burning up the wood or getting hot and flying off.
2. safe....cannot cut you.....cut your materials and the stick you hand on it and you are ok.
3. easy to handle...was able to ease it into materials without trouble.
The bad: blades are kinda pricey so i would be shopping online..the teeth on the "general use" blade were completely worn down, but I was cutting laminate flooring which is hard as hell--and i didn't read the manual so i might have pushing too hard or not moving it enough.
I would go ahead an pick up an extra blade for hardwoods or metal....i was able to finish, but having an extra on hand would be good.
overall---great tool, not meant for sawing logs, but for undercuts, strange miter cuts (like 2 or 3 angles on trim) or hard to access cuts, this will save you time and frustration---i would recomend every DIY'er have one.
**** I have no idea why other people said the blades were comng off----perhaps they had an older model, but the whole "hub" on mine was metal, had metal studs, and I was able to tighten the hex without any problems.

I bought mine when the national hardware chains put them on discount just before Christmas 08.
Finding tools (blades, attachments) to use is sometimes difficult and is definitely the most expensive part.
In the year in between, I've used the tool about 6 times.
Cutting copper pipe - fairly easy, but a cleaner, square cut can be made with a $10 wheel&clamp cutter.
Excellent for cutting woodwork in tight spots - I used it trimming moulding near the floor and working in or under cabinets.
Tile and grout blades were hard to find, and really didn't do the job I expected.
I finally used a nipper to cut tile and used the older dremel (like a mini-drill) to remove grout.
This is also nice for plunge cuts in plywood, panel, particle board or gypsum/greenboard -- just don't use this after the work is hung unless you know what you have behind it.
Like that (other company's) night time info-mercial, there are probably a 1000 uses for this that I haven't thought of. If you are a gadget geek, this belongs in your tool cabinet.
The blade on this is FAST. The vibrations can loosen your tool, so watch for that. Take breaks to make sure the blade or attachment is still secure under the hex nut & washer. When checking the tool, know that the business parts get HOT. I lost my fingerprints for a week when I tried to reset a loose blade. Of course, I was inside the under-sink cabinet, so I probably should have had more light and room to move for safety.
The blade does get hot, so when cutting anything for more than a minute or so, keep something handy in case your wood / plastic / other flammable stuff gets hot enough to ignite.
I bought this tool as a second choice to the Fein - which was way out of my price range. Since I don't use it that often, I'm very happy with the value. I will probably fill the case like other Amazon users have shown - with expanding foam. It is too much unused empty space, and tools can get caught in there. I haven't had a reason to call for this tool, but I agree from past dealings - as other Amazon reviews have said, Dremel customer service is pretty good. I will also probably get a lock washer or two as other reviewers added.
This is not a device for heavy use or contracting work. It feels good in the hand, but any kind of work glove might make it difficult to control.
There isn't a safety on here - if you drop it the device stays on. (hopefully newer models will include a safety switch).
I can only speculate that since the tools are still expensive and hard to find, this device isn't breaking any sales records.
Still - I am happy with mine. If I wasn't concerned with the lack of an auto-shutoff and the ease of starting fires, I'd give these as gifts too.
So, for all-around utility, I give it 5 stars, but take away 1 - maybe 1 and 1/2 for safety concerns and limited tool supply.

This tool has already been quite invaluable in my home remodeling. Even cutting through very hard 40 year old planks it feels like butter. I did have some problem with the blade coming loose, but after i raise the rpm it didnt come loose again. The scrapper blade was quite useful as well with leveling off filler foam. I do wish the blades were a bit more robust though. I was suprised how easy it was to handle and to make precise cuts. The vents do certainly cause a problem since my hand automaticly moves over them to do detailed work.

Bought this gift for my dad for Christmas...for the "man who has everything". He often calls me when he finds something new to use it for. He seems to love it and has NO complaints thus far. Ive very satisfied with the product!

Unfortunately Dremel cut too many corners on this one. The results I got while using it were great. It was the perfect tool for all the tight cuts I needed to make and it was very easy to control. If you used the unit for more than a few minutes it heats up to where it is uncomfortable to hold.
On one project I had to remove a significant amount of grout and I purchased the separate carbide blade. I used it for a few hours and had to take frequent breaks to cool the tool down. Then while using it hot black grease started spraying out the vents. I was honestly worried about starting a fire with this thing.
Dremel should have spent more money on better components and sold a model that doesn't melt for $150-200. The Fein 250 is solid but costs $400. I had to wonder how Dremel did it for $100 and now I know. Wait until they get the bugs worked out of this one or be prepared to have to re-buy the tool if you use it frequently.
