"comfortable, magnetic, and have lots of tips" 2010-05-28

I bought this mainly for the Torx tips, which come in small to large sizes, but once I began to use the other tips, I couldn't go back to my old set. The handle is very comfortable compared to metal ribbed ones. The tips seem strong, but like most, if you want them to last long, use the correct one for the screw you are removing. Overall, a good buy and I'm happy I bought this set.

 "A Must-Have for Computer Repair" 2010-04-21
By B. Pedersen
I work in Tech Support and am constantly taking computers apart and putting them back together. For laptops, PDAs and cell phones this is an absolute must. It is the best deal for yor money too. I carry it with me everywhere. I recently bought another so I could have one at home and one at work. The tips hold up to a lot of wear and tear too. I have tried others and they either strip the screws or ruin the bit pretty quickly, but these have lasted for the past 9 months of regular to heavy use.

 "Machete Jr" 2010-05-17
By J. Stephen Coffman
I just purchased the Machete jr from Academy Sports and Outdoors for $17.99. I know I could have gotten it cheaper online, but it was an impulse buy.

I have been using a full sized cheap machete from SportsmansGuide.com which I purchased for %7.00 a couple of years ago. I did not like the handle on the cheap one, but it does have a full tang.

The Gerber machete has a better handle, but only a little bit of a tang.

I guess I will keep the old machete too.

The Jr will be good for cutting watermelons and other melons with one whack and it does look cooler then the cheap one with the tape around the handle.

 "Kinda crappy." 2010-05-03
By Steven X. Busby (Big Beaver County)
Flimsy. This is the post recall new version. I torture tested my old version before sending it back for replacement. It failed. I actually used it to cut down a Home Depot aluminum patio cover that got crushed by snow. The aluminum tore the blade. The sheath is great. Because its so thin its actually perfect for small branches. But for cutting saplings or bigger I recommend a milspec Onterio machette.

 "Dangerous and useless toy" 2010-05-01
By C. Sarda
Gerber should seriously start thinking to recall and apologize for this stupid toys they have the nerves to call a Machete. The unsafe short tang issue could cause horrendous damage to the user or bystanders and therefore could cause Gerber some serious and costly lawsuits.

For Starters, this "things" are made out of Stainless Steel which is NOT suitable for a Machete (Unless is the rare and super-expensive Ultra High Carbon Stainless, which is, of course, not used on these), And, to ad to the insult, the Stainless Steel on these is of the WORST quality available.

Ah!! And this thing is MADE IN CHINA.

Stainless Steel is softer, not flexible, easier to break and the edges dull quicker than carbons.

Carbon Steel Blades are harder, cheaper than Stainless Steel and retains sharpness longer.

The only disadvantage is that Carbon Steel Blades are much more vulnerable to rust when in contact with moisture and they must be oiled, painted or electroplated to be protected from it.

Do you wanna buy a serious, working, REAL Machete? Buy one made by the people who have been making and using them for CENTURIES and whose lives depend on them, people who perfectly understands what a Machete should be: South and Central America.

Buy a Tramontina, Imacasa, Hansa, Colombian made Collins or Belloto, 1050 to 1095 SPRING CARBON STEEL.

And don't get fooled by the low prices, these Latin tools are the REAL THING.

Machetes are cheap tools by nature.

In the end, a machete is just a functional tool, a relatively thin sheet of cheaper-than-stainless carbon steel and a wooden/plastic handle. how expensive could that be?

Besides, one of the reasons South and Central American Machetes are so cheap is because they are made and sold there in very large quantities. Remember, in those countries a Machete is an ubiquitous everyday necessary tool, not a zombie-killing curiosity or a Samurai-Safari Weapon for kids.

Wanna Buy American? The only one I could recommend are those ones from Ontario, the thicker ones made out of 1095 Carbon Steel, they seem to know their thing.

 "Anybody received a recalled/new version?" 2010-03-15
By rhodeymark (Newport, RI United States)
I'm a little dismayed that so much info has come out since I ordered this tool. I have registered to send it back for the handle recall, but really don't use it as my "go to" camp saw, so wasn't in the target recall group. The tang situation is distressing though. I cannot see how they would be so concerned about handle slippage and not take the opportunity to address the ridiculous lever stress point they have created in the front of the handle. The Gerber recall hotline says replacement has a modified handle, lanyard addition, "and other safety modifications". Has anyone received their replacement Gator and disassembled? You can buy a full tang machete on Amazon for $7.99 today, so Gerber deserves the reputation hit if they dont lengthen the tang while they have the chance.

"This is an excellent jigsaw but.." 2010-06-05
By R. Dare (San Francisco)
This is an excellent jigsaw for those who use one frequently. Infrequent users will forget where the on/off switch is and will fumble around for it. If your postioning allows, keep one index finger or thumb on the switch so you can shut it off immediately when necessary. The top handle model has the trigger in an intuitive position but the trade off is your hand is further away from the blade with less control - when using one hand.

 "Lacking in safety" 2010-05-02
By mr_silverhare (MD United States)
I bought the Bosch 1591EVSK barrel grip a couple weeks ago based off of the positive reviews and Bosch's reputation.

First let me say that it is a very solid jigsaw. Plenty of power and the barrel grip gives you extra control. My major complaint is safety. There is an on/off switch on the side of the barrel. Bosch should have used a safety switch similar to what Milwaukee's angle grinders use. If the saw ever got out of your hands it would continue to run. Another point that I do not like is the speed adjustment is located on the end of the barrel making it difficult to adjust the speed while operating the saw.

"Lesson Learned - There's more to a Jigsaw then a blade going Up and Down." 2010-03-22
By tedth66 (northwest)
I needed a jigsaw but couldn't decide whether to pay ~[...] for the Bosch or ~80 for the Craftsman. Here's my thinking behind my first attempt of filling my jigsaw void... "Hmmm??? The blade goes up and down, right?,,, Anyone can do that, right? I KNOW, just in case the CM saw sucks I'll put Bosch blades in it and I'll spend half the money as I would if I went with the Bosch. BONUS!!!!! ~ in this week's ad Sears is having a SALE on power tools,,, I can get the Craftsman jigsaw for 60 bucks,,,, DONE DEAL, Craftsman jigsaw with Bosch blades and all will be good."

WRONG!!! Just like the shoes didn't make Michael Jordan who he was (sorry Nike) the blades aren't going to make the Craftsman jigsaw any better than what it is. After a few cuts with the Craftsman jigsaw I quickly learned that there's more to a jigsaw then a blade going up and down. The jigsaw has to be easy to control, comfortable and produce a quality cut; all things that the Craftsman falls way short on.

My attempt at 'saving money' ended up costing me more. Here's why I ended up buying the Bosch 1591EVsk Barrel Grip Jigsaw....

CONTROL - Typically it takes a few cuts to get a feel for a power tool. My first cut with the Bosch was heaven. I Immediately felt in control. I wasn't being anymore patient with this saw than I was with the CM but due to the reduced vibration in the Bosch vs the CM the Bosch gave me the control to cut a 4" port accurately and with the quality I was looking for in a jigsaw. I was also using the same USED blade that I used in the CM saw so it was saw vs saw. The barrel design allowed me to make curved cuts easier because it didn't require my entire arm to move along with the saw. I think the barrel design is much easier to maneuver than the typical jigsaw handled designs.

COMFORT - The Bosch Barrel Grip is comfortable and fits 'like a glove' and allows you to make accurate tight controlled curves. The lack of bulkiness and vibration makes the Bosch super comfortable to use.

NOISE - for those of you that have only used the Bosch jigsaw you probably think it's loud. Compared to the CM the Bosch is not loud at all. I always wear ear protection when using power tools but I definitely noticed a difference in the db level between the two.

BLADE CHANGING - BChanging is a snap. pull a lever and it releases the blade. I don't think it gets any easier than that. To insert a blade you push it in and you're ready to go. CAKE!!! Yet another bash on CM,,, there's a big red spring-loaded knob that you need to turn and it's tucked in behind the plastic blade guard. I have small hands and I can barely get to it and turn it to unlock the blade. The spring loaded knob seems like it requires about 30lbs of pressure to turn it. I'm very surprised I didn't break that plastic shield while removing/adding blades in CM.

Quality of cut - The Bosch jigsaw is simply outstanding. The Bosch has a couple of guide pins along with the guide roller to prevent the blade from deflecting, I assume. These guide pins make all the difference in the world for the cut quality. The cut with my CM with a lonely guide roller did not prevent the blade from wandering/deflecting as it cut through a 3/4 inch piece of plywood or 3/4 inch MDF. With the Bosch the cut was straight down and straight up. I said goodbye to the ~22.3degree deflected cut that the POS CM saw left me.

As for the dust collection and other features, I haven't used them much. There is a dust blower that you can turn on and off and it did a fantastic job of keeping the dust off of the line that I was following. I remember this being very frustrating with the CM because I continually had to stop and brush off the line so I could see it (I was wearing a face mask so I couldn't blow off the dust) or setup a fan to constantly blow off the material.

Nice to haves - Anti Splintering insert, No-Mar faceplate and a rugged case that allows you to store the saw WITH the blade installed unlike the CM fabric bag.

The Moral of the story ~ don't skimp on power tools ... go with the best if you care about the quality of what the tool is supposed to do.

 "Read this one." 2010-03-20
By Mike D. Watson (Toledo, OH)
i got this saw a few days ago and i'm happy with the product. i read many reviews and compared jig saws from top manufacturers, such as festool and hilti. hear is my observations.

the bottom of this saw is a metal plate, not the part that bevels but the very bottom that touches the work piece, and it can be replaced if damaged. i like that feature.

the non maring bottom is a seperate attachment that fits over the plate, it fits securely but does not screw or fasten to the bottom. i would have liked a more positive connection but it hasent given me problems yet.

the blade eject is sping loaded and will shoot out hot blades.

Does not accept U shank bosch blades only the T kind.

the saw comes with a splinter free plastic part and it works well. this is a feature found on the festool saw. be sure to order a extras because they wear out and you only get one.

dust extraction vacum connection is sold as a seperate part. i wish i would have ordered that at the time of purchase.

front of the saw gets hot. my hands touched it a few times. dont touch the front metal parts if hot.

the blade stabilazation works suprisingly well. i held a square to a 2x4 curve cut and had only a small wander. PROBLEM, the guides rest directly on the blade. the blade gets very hot and i sometimes hear sqweeking. after a short time the blade shows wear marks from the contact. parts that touch wear out. even carbide. a better design would be bearings like band saw guides. i havent had any problems but the design could be improved.

in all a great saw i recommend you buy one.

get dust extraction kit and splinter free parts at time of purchase.

Doubletape 25' Two Sided Measuring Tape

Buy Cheap Doubletape 25' Two Sided Measuring Tape

Buy Low Price From Here Now

DoubleTape was conceived and created by a professional tradesman who realized how much easier his work would be if a tape measure could be read from the underside.

DoubleTape measuring tape will make any measuring job easier. The measurements are printed on both the upper and lower surface of the blades. Unlike normal tapes which buckle when turned over, DoubleTape blade remains rigid for overhead use. This saves time, effort, and frustration. With DoubleTape, take advantage of the excellent standout length; extend the tape overhead with one hand. Take the measurement from the underside of the tape and use your free hand for marking. You won't need to wrestle like you would with ordinary tapes, and you won't need a helper to hold the tape.

Markings are in Feet and Inches with additional highlighting at each 16 inch length for marking standard studs. Additional markings are also at each 485mm interval for use with side studs.

 "Handy" 2010-04-02
By Ray McCullie (Missouri United States)
I was surprised this hadn't been done before and it seems like these aren't being made anymore, which is a shame. It's a nice tape, not as good as a Stanley but it can do something a Stanley can't. The big advantage to having the marking on both sides of the tape, for me, is measuring stock. Having the tape across the underside of a sheet or board instead of on top make it very easy to look down and see the edge of the board on the tape, rather then having the tape on the edge of the board and dealing with parallax.

For the price I'd recommend picking one up. They say you can never have too many clamps, I'd say that was true of tapes and levels too.

"Best measuring tape I've ever had." 2009-12-17
By HDS (Wheelersburg, OH)
This is a great tape. Well made. Operates smoothly. The lock is easily operated with your thumb. And easy to read measurements on both sides of the tape. Very handy when working overhead. The tape is narrower than my other tapes, which actually makes it easier to use. It is also stiffer, holding out well past 6 feet horizontal unsupported. This is now about the only tape I use. By far the best measuring tape I have ever used.

"This Sure Looks Like A Heck Of A Bargain To Me!" 2009-11-27
By T. Coleman (Texas)
I'm not a person who ordinarily thrills on a tape measure. I'm not a carpenter, not in construction, never have been in a type of work where carrying one on my belt was part of the job. I use a tape measure around the house.... ummm... measuring things.

So, if you want a "pro" review, try some others. If you want the opinion of a retired old fart who simply appreciates quality, value and one heck of a bargain, let me tell you my part briefly.

It's neat that it will stand on end and reach the celing. A neighbor lady truly respected its stamina.

It has all the measurements I need, up to twenty-five feet. If an inch needs to be divided by more than 32, then I don't have any use for that inch.

It has those measurements on both sides, in case you're standing upside down.

The rubberized case feels sexy and grips firmly.

The wind-up gizmo (to use tech terms) works nicely.

Holding it makes a person feel like a pro, even when he/she's not. It's doggone weighty, that it is.

It has a belt clip so you can wear it to the supermarket, feeling like the pro you aren't. Until the above-mentioned weight pulls your pants down too far.

Priced in the six buck area on Prime seems almost obscene and I suggest grabbing this now because I doubt that Amazon will use it as a lightning deal since it's already priced incredibly low. Again, I'm no expert; but I do see a bargain here.

I'll betcha pros can see that, too.

I received this as a gift and loves it. It's got a nice heavy-duty feel with the solid grip. I was using it for furniture placement planning and found my old measuring tape limiting for large furnitures.

This tape extends to a nice long 25 feet, the curve on the tape prevents it from bending backwards, and there's measurement on both sides so you can easily read it when measuring something overhead (ie. the ceiling). This measuring tape is great value and a very useful tool for any home.

 "Makita Hammer Drill" 2010-04-10
By B.O.B. (Maryland)
I tried the Dewalt that's similar to this and it was too heavy for me. The batteries on this Makita also charge faster and are much lighter in weight. It's a sturdy little drill that I use for everything around the house. So far I'm delighted with it.

"Average performance and features overall" 2010-03-17
By Bryan Sanders (Chicago)
The Makita BHP452 is a not a good choice for light duty work where a lighter drill will work as well and it is not a good choice for heavy duty applications where its 2-speed gearbox and lack of torque greatly restrict its overall performance. If I was comparing it to an old NiCad drill its performance would seem almost magical but compared to other high end 18 volt lithium-ion cordless drills it performance puts it in the middle of the pack.

Makita makes one model with 3-speed gearbox but I have not been able to find one for sale. I spoke with a Makita rep and was told that they had too many problems with people using the high speed setting for large hole saws and burning up the drills. Seems like the Makita folks should put in some instructions on the best way to use the drill and help everyone out. Most people try to use a cordless drill the same way and with the same hole saws that they have been using on their cord drills and then wonder why they have problems. For now I have been very satisfied with the performance of our DeWalt cordless drills with their 3-speed gear boxes. It is a trial and error process to find the best power range and speed for different hole cutters and materials but it is well worth the effort.

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt 1/2-Inch XRP Lithium-Ion Hammerdrill

The chuck is not bad but does loosen up with vibration which is not unusual but a pain when it happens midway through hole cutting. If the drill falls out and you are up on a ladder it is even more disconcerting. The clutch adjustment works as well as any drill and the case is a standard Makita so the charger has its own secure spot but the full size batteries do not fit in the spaces unless the white plastic protective covers are removed. Have other Makita drills and the batteries do fit in the case so it seems to be something peculiar to the BHP452 kit.

The charger has a loud fan that is supposed to prolong battery life. Which is one of the odd aspects of the whole lithium-ion quick charge marketing hype. In general with NiCad and NiMh batteries their life is greatly decreased in terms of the number of charge cycles possible and the emphasis on how fast a lithium-ion battery can be recharged seems likely to result in more problems with what are very expensive batteries.

Charge time is in theory about 30 minutes for the full size lithium-ion batteries but in the charger manual it states that after charging the battery one should leave the battery in the charger for another 30-60 minutes to cool down. Better than the NiMh batteries where the recommendation is to let the battery continue to trickle charge for an additional 24 hours.

The full size batteries provide a lot of drilling and even the half size ones are better than others I have used. The full size batteries are needed to get the full power rating out of the drill. With 1/2 size batteries the drill power on any drill is greatly reduced and drilling deck screws or using a hole saw can drain the battery in a few minutes.

When I want to know the relative power a drill can deliver the quickest and easiest way I have found is to take a 5-6 inch hole cutter and bore a hole in MDF and see how long it takes to cut and how long it takes to recharge the drill afterward. With the half size battery and a 450 inch pound rated drill I can barely cut one hole and it takes several minutes. Toward the end of the hole cutting the drill will start to chatter as the overload protection kicks in and cuts power repeatedly to the drill motor. Using a 600+ in. lb. drill I can cut the same hole in 20 seconds and cut a dozen holes with the full size battery. The medium duty drill is not going to last out the year if used on heavy duty drilling or driving jobs. Better to save time on the job and money in the long run by getting the highest powered 18v drill you can find.

The lack of a second handle also limits the use of the drill to light to medium duty use. Without the second handle I find myself using my hand on the back of the drill to steady it and in doing so I block the air ports that enable the fan to cool the motor. This is a problem with all drills lacking a side handle in situations where two hands are needed and it is unfortunate that side handles are not something you can add to a drill kit later. All the low to medium grade drills are designed in a way that there is no way to attach a side handle should you want to do so later.

All 18 volt drills should have 3 speed gear boxes and a way to attach a side handle. Otherwise you might as well get a 12 volt drill and use a much cheaper 3/8" corded drill for the heavy lifting. I was on a job where a membrane roof was being laid down along with all the joint seals and edge trim and the workers were using several 3/8" corded drills and working around the extension cords. It seemed odd at the time but now I realize they were making the best drill choice for their needs based on the available technology at the time. After all a DeWalt 7 amp 3/8" cordless drill sells for $59 and it will outperform almost all the cordless drills on the market and the cordless sells for 3-4 times as much and requires more care in its use. For the DIY homeowner wanting to save money and get a light duty 18v cordless drill will extend its life by using a 3/8" corded drill for the tough jobs and save the cordless for the light duty drilling and driving jobs around the house.

The choice of drills is the one factor that most affects drill performance. Bi-metal hole saws are unbelievably cheap to manufacturer and OK for light duty hole cutting in mild steel but for other materials and especially for wood and composites like particle board it is a drill killer. Using one of the modern big gullet hole cutters like the Milwaukee Big Hawg or the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters will make it possible to easily drill holes that are three times as large and to cut 3" holes in OSB or Hardie siding in seconds without putting a dent in the battery's charge. Same applies to the new Bosch paddle bits for wood.

BLUE BOAR TSF12 12 Piece High Performance Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw kit - 2-1/4" Cut Depth. Cut 10x as fast and using 1/40th the battery power. Cordless Drills cut holes 3x as large versus bi-metal hole saws. Deep side gullets for fast plug removal

For cutting through fiberglass or drywall or plaster or stucco or building brick the Blue Boar TCT Stucco hole cutters are fantastic. With stucco or brick siding they cut through the masonry and keep on going through the metal mesh and the plywood underneath all with the same bit. I save about 45 minutes per hole compared to line drilling the stucco, cutting the wire, and then using a hole saw on the plywood or OSB.
